Matlacha Town Guide: The Fishing Bridge, Painted Galleries and Matlacha Pass

Matlacha is an unincorporated fishing village in Lee County, strung along Pine Island Road where it crosses Matlacha Pass between Cape Coral and Pine Island. It is a few hundred residents, one road, a bridge and a great deal of water. This guide draws on Florida Slice's city record and public sources. It is an orientation, not a claim of a recent reporting visit or a guarantee of current business hours.

The fishing bridge

The span over Matlacha Pass earned a reputation as the "fishingest bridge" in Florida, and people still fish from the village waterfront.

The painted village

Galleries, studios and shops painted in loud tropical colors line the short stretch of Pine Island Road.

Protected water

Matlacha Pass Aquatic Preserve and Matlacha Pass National Wildlife Refuge surround the village with mangrove and seagrass estuary.

A village that came back

Hurricane Ian struck in 2022; the village's rebuilding is part of what you see now.

History: from Calusa water to a causeway village

Long before the road, this estuary belonged to the Calusa, whose shell works survive nearby at Pineland on Pine Island. The village itself grew up as a fishing settlement once Pine Island Road and its causeway connected Pine Island to the mainland in the 20th century, and the bridge over the pass became its center.

Matlacha has never incorporated; it is governed as part of Lee County. That status helps explain its scale: a working waterfront and a short commercial strip rather than a planned downtown.

Culture: color and the waterfront

Artists turned the old fish houses and cottages into galleries and painted them in bright colors, giving the village its look. Fishing remains part of daily life, from the bridge and docks to the guides who work the pass.

Businesses and current conditions

Galleries, seafood restaurants, bait shops and kayak outfitters cluster on Pine Island Road. This guide does not rank businesses or promise hours; after Hurricane Ian some reopened, moved or closed, so check current listings before visiting.

Reading the town in a day

Walk the village strip, look at the pass from the waterfront, and paddle or take a guided trip into the preserve's mangroves before continuing west to Pine Island and the Calusa Heritage Trail at Pineland. This is an editorial suggestion, not a timed itinerary.
